Mrmmmmf!

Hrm.

For the past few weeks, S & I have been looking at places to live. We've had trouble choosing, for the following reasons:

  • Possibility of us moving to Montreal at the end of the year. Yes, fo rillz.
  • Possibility of me getting a massive promotion. But we don't know yet.
  • Possibility of S working closer to me.
  • Possibility of S going to grad school in New England.
Scenario A:

If we decide to stay in the area, we'd probably live in an apartment for about six months before ::gasp!:: doing something really old-people-sounding and buying a house... Which would make it necessary for us to stay here for at least 3 years in order to get the $8000 tax credit for first-time home buyers. Which would make it too tempting for me to resist enrolling in a nearby law school, thus miring us here for an additional couple of years.

A further complication is my very probable career change (yes, a completely different one from the one discussed earlier). It would be logical for my career to take priority, as guilty as this makes me. It might hinder S's growth, both career- and academic-wise.

Scenario B:

We allow S's career development to take the reins and move to Montreal. This would be a grand adventure and I'd be all for it if... I could get a job there. We'd be very dependent upon my income. I don't speak French. My skills pretty much make me extremely attractive to government, but as an American, am I allowed to even work in Canadian government?

This situation is further obscured by the fact that nobody knows for sure what his company will do regarding the office here and the office in Montreal.

Scenario C:

S gets into Juilliard (or some other prestigious school) and we move up to New England. It would be up to me to find a high-powered job to support us, a responsibility that I have no problem with. In order for this scenario to play out, S would have to decide that a career in vocal performance is more important than a career in another field (and its trappings). If he did choose a career in performance, in all probability, it would make life very different for both of us. I would have to be extremely independent, in both a career and a psychological sense. Our relationship would change significantly, I would have to wrap my brain around a completely different conceptualization of our future.

::sigh:: The biggest problem is our current lack of information! Sooooo, we are currently planning on finding a posh little 1 bedroom in an upscale location, beginning at the end of August, and we'll stay there for probably around six months. I'd be saving money at even the poshest of the locations we've been looking at; downtown living has not been cheap. This is the only thing that I'm pretty certain about at this point.

Oh! I was just in the middle of a blog post about something similar when your post came up in my RSS reader!

Phil and I just moved in together and are in that "purge and combine" stage with all of our material stuff. It's fun and so much less stressful than splitting time between the two places. All the animals are much happier too with twice the company.

Oh the adventures you'll have!

Best of luck with the apartment search - I spent about a month looking for a "posh for a grad student" apt, and am quite happy with that I found. I'll be even happier once I'm there end of July, lounging by the pool instead of unpacking!

At some point I'd love to catch up with you guys (perhaps over sushi?) And if you get midway into the "purge and combine" stage and find a lil' yellow blouse and a black skirt, could they make their way back to me? ;)

Metricula - luckily, neither of us have much in the way of material possessions... I think it will be all combining and no purging!

It's hard living 30 minutes from one's significant other. :\

Tinka! You got it right! :D You should send me a message and let me know where you're at! Sushi is in my Top 10 Favorite Things of All Time so I'm always down - and I happen to know precisely where those wayward articles are hiding! :D

One of my best friends used to work/live in Montreal for a while- I could hook you up and you can ask questions about it and maybe she has some connections on the job front...It is very beautiful there! (though I only visited for a weekend)
