A Work in Progress

I have interspersed some images from Natty & Pepper's wedding throughout this post. #1 - the marvelous sunset sky during the ceremony. #2 - the ceremony. #3 - S and I demonstrating our unparalleled dance moves. #4 - Hotel Roanoke. #5 - Natty and Pepper on their happy day.

I owe S an apology. More than an apology. I'm not sure how much I want to delve into an autoanalysis of my psyche, or how much detail I want to divulge regarding S and I's intense relationship, but there are only two other people on the planet as devoted to my joy and delight, and they are my parents.

My lesson with L last night was a study in finesse. We went through the Poulenc and the Chopin, and she put mine and S's names down on her draft of the performance program (my heart rate went up significantly while I watched her write). S came over afterward and I sat down and prepared to accompany him for the first time.

So, I sat down at my keyboard and began the song, really focusing on maintaining a strict, even tempo. I totally wasn't expecting it when he came in - the interplay of piano and voice is shockingly 3-dimensional when you're the pianist! That's exactly what I was - shocked. I screwed up about 4 measures or so from the end and stopped, but all I could think was: Holy crap! I didn't bomb! And then: Ah! So fun! I was all starry-eyed and full of silly romantic thoughts and analogies pertaining to our musical lovemaking.

I've got this well-documented tendency to make a huge mental deal out of everything, and I routinely underestimate myself. And thus, when S casually told me he'd like to see more lyricism in the opening measures, it was like a punch in the face. I realized later that I'd played so well that he completely forgot that I'd never accompanied before, and he, experienced performer that he is, quickly looked for musically-advanced ways to make the whole thing even better. He told me to try it one way and then another. Meanwhile, I was still stuck at "Ohmigod. I played some stuff and he sang with it! A-hyuck a-hyuck!" I was happy with my oatmeal, and S was eager to create a world-class chocolate soufflé.

I was hurt and confused and probably totally irrational. That's what girlfriends are for, right? Anyway. This led to some extrapolation, some drama and a couple hours of intense discussion. But as always, in the end, we understood each other completely.

In other news...

It was decided yesterday that, effective July 1st, I will be a . . . Performance Auditor! Not only do I get to keep my job, but I get to embark upon a completely different career path. I'm still slightly dazed; I wasn't expecting my superiors to hand me a completely new position without requiring me to apply - and me having no prior auditing experience (beyond my theses, which consisted of a policy analysis and a budget analysis)!

I honestly expected to be a casualty of the economic crisis. My parents even gave me express permission to move home, and I was seriously starting to think about where I'd store all of my furniture.

Elation! This makes . . . Other Things . . . much more feasible. ;D
