I won a little online poetry contest with this poem, about the rise and fall of Easter Island. It's not only a mournful story of love and war and beauty and destruction, but I think it's a good analogy for humanity's use of the earth as a playground and a battlefield without heeding signs that we will soon run out of giant palms (i.e. resources).
The clever learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others.
