I started and finished my 2nd project last night - I made the pattern, pinned it and cut it before P90X yoga with Caspian, pinned and sewed all seams after yoga, then went grocery shopping and ate dinner (turkey meatballs and pasta shells with sauce, cucumber salad) before pressing and hemming at 11:30pm... But it's still a secret, since it's a surprise for its intended recipient!
Went to fabric store right after work yesterday and also bought black and white jacquard calico for placemats (in addition to the fabric for the gift project), and fusible batting to give them thickness. Calico is inexpensive (if it's not a marked-up name brand) and this jacquard is elegant without being stuffy, feminine or too flowery. Bleh! Contrary to the butterfly-covered sewing basket, I can't stand decor sporting cutsey flowers, gingham, plaid, hearts, lace (okay in lingerie or goth attire, not decor), themes or anything pastel (except beige). We'll see if I cut placemats tonight - I have some serious piano practicing I need to do. Like serious.
After the placemats, my next project is to make a set of reusable cotton grocery totes. There're fabrics at the store just for making grocery bags, and it's cheap. No more plastic, and no soaked-through paper bags bursting at inopportune moments. I asked Caspian his opinion regarding my enthusiasm for sewing. His response was heavily sarcastic.
"See? It's a sign that you're finally embracing your true calling as homemaker! See how naturally enthusiastic you are about this feminine task! Don't fight it!"
Heh. He became serious and said, "I think you're enthusiastic about it because it's useful and can be very creative." Ah, the intersection of art and practicality, I loves it. Art is lovely on its own, and practicality operates according to the principles of the three Es (economy, efficiency and effectiveness) - if you somehow manage to get both functioning in tandem... Ferraris are a good example of this inspirational crux - you can get somewhere artistically in "practically" no time.
Can I dream in color? Last night in my dream, one of the anonymous characters had a beautiful tattoo that arced around her breasts and across her back, dripping muted hues down her torso... It was beautiful, and mostly blue.
