So, my dad was explaining to me how static removal guns work. They take advantage of the piezoelectric effect. When you pull the trigger, a spring-loaded mechanism bends a stack of quartz crystals, which throw off charged particles. The beam is focused by a metal needle.

He then remarked that electrons like to spread out evenly around a sphere, but tend to jump off and charge the air when confronted with a point. I wondered aloud why the electrons want to behave that way, not expecting any serious answer, but my mom had wandered into the room to hear my question, and said,

"Because there's love in the universe, that's why."
